Over the next few weeks, as part of the celebrations, I will be sharing some nursery rhyme activities that can be used with your children learning English.

Why teach nursery rhymes to children learning English?
  • One way children develop their language and communication skills is through listening to songs and then, when they are ready, singing them. Nursery rhymes help children to hear, identify, manipulate and experiment with the sounds of the English language.
  • Through rhymes, children are exposed to simple story sequences, helping them to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story. They are perfect for young English Learners because they are short and easy to remember.
  • Rhymes are also repetitive in nature, so they help children to practice words over and over again in a fun way, which is ideal for children learning English as an additional language.
  • It's a great way for parents to get involved with their children's learning. Parents are often worried about talking to their children in English because of their accents. When singing nursery rhymes parents naturally have the correct intonation and stress because of the rhythm of the rhyme. It's fun and interactive too!
  • Nursery rhymes sung together fosters emotional connections and bonding.
Look at for Doctor Foster next week!
