Well it's Monday the 9th November and here we are again with World Nursery Rhyme Week.
What better way is there to start a blog on teaching English to your younsters than with nursery rhymes?! World Nursery Rhyme is in its third year with an aim of promoting and celebrating the importance of traditional rhymes.
One way children develop their language and communication skills is through listening and singing nursery rhymes with their caregivers. That includes children learning English as a foreign language too.
The Founders of World Nursery Week, Music Bugs over in the UK pick 5 well-known rhymes and encourage us to "sing them, recite them, play them, watch them, colour them in and dance to them".
The 5 rhymes for World Nursery Rhyme Week 2015 are:
Monday: Miss Polly Had A Dolly...
Tuesday: Ring O Ring O Roses
Wednesday: 1-2-3-4-5
Thursday: Horsie Horsie
Friday: Grand Old Duke Of York
Every Monday morning, I have a little group of mums and toddlers, learning English. This morning we enjoyed:
Miss Polly Had a Dolly
What you will need:
a doll
a doll's bed
a doctor's bag
a doctor's hat
a doctor's coat
a pretend play medical kit
a pretend phone
I held my dolly closely and introduced myself I'm Polly. this is my doll. My doll is sick. I felt her brow and explained that she is hot. I then called the doctor doctor, doctor, come quick, my doll is sick! Of course the doctor came with his bag and his hat and he knocked on the door. I played the part of the doctor, I shook my head and waggled my finger and said put her straight to bed. I gave doll her medicine and wrote an imaginary prescription!

We then played. The children picked up the doll and gave her cuddles, they administered medicine and put bandages and plasters where needed. One little girl was so concerned that doll was really sick that she couldn't put her down. She look of empathy on her little face was evident. The childrens' parents and I played alongside them, we spoke in English and used bridging technique (we gave the children the words and expressions they needed to explain what they are doing. Oh, she's hurt her arm. Poor doll. Do you want to put a plaster on? Yes, you're putting a plaster on her arm etc) We have already been singing lots of songs about parts of the body, so this was great revision too.
We then sang the song
Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick, (rock a pretend doll)
So she called for the Doctor to come quick, quick, quick (hold a phone to ear)
The Doctor came with his bag and his hat (hold a bag and tap head)
and he knocked on the door with a rat a tat tat. (knock on a pretend door)
He looked at the dolly and he shook his head, (shake head)
He said Miss Polly Put her straight to bed (point to bed)
He wrote on the paper for a pill pill pill. (write prescription)
I'll be back in the morning, (tap watch)
For the bill, bill, bill
We repeated the song several times adding actions
